What made you say, “Hey, I want to be a published author”? | |||
Hi, Sherry! First, let me say thank you for having me visit today. I’m thrilled to be here. Concerning your first question, when I first started writing all I thought was, “Boy, I’d like to write my own western love story.” I didn’t think about actually being published. That desire grew the more I got involved with RWA.
WHERE the WIND BLOWS won RWA's Golden Heart. Did you ever imagine you'd win such a coveted award? | |||
My win came the year after I attended my first national conference. I remember walking into the awards ceremony with a great feeling of awe. I closed my eyes and asked God to please let me be a part of that someday—and the next year I won. LOL
Better than anything I can describe. Unbelievable! I can remember the seconds leading up to the moment my name was announced like it was yesterday. It’s still fun!
You write beautiful, sweeping Western Historicals. What made you want to write in that sub-genre of romance? | ||
---|---|---|
I think it’s due to the fact I grew up riding and showing horses. We even bred a few and raised a few babies. As a girl, I used to ride my horse to my friend’s house (we lived way out) to go visiting.
Which comes first for you—the characters, or the story? | ||
The character, always. All of my westerns, with the exception of Sourdough Creek, start out in the hero’s POV. So, I guess you could say for me, first comes the hero.
Do you have any favorite Cowboys who inspire you and your writing? | ||
Yes! Lucas McCain of the Rifleman. I was hooked as a little girl and still love it to this day. There are great lessons (except how he kills all the bad guys) in each half-hour show.
You’re a top name Equine Photographer. How do you balance your photography business with writing? |
I’m retired from horse show photography now, but back in the day when I was traveling several days out of each month as well as writing, it was a challenge. I got up early—very early. I wrote whenever there was a free moment. When the boys were in school. A quiet evening when I found myself home alone, etc. I jumped in and picked up where I had left off and after a few months I’d find myself at the end of the story.
When you’re not writing or taking pictures, what do you do for fun? | ||
I have lots of things I love to do. I usually walk the hills at least an hour a day, not only for a good workout but it helps me plot my pages for that day’s work. I read lots of samples, then if I like it and I’m hooked, I’ll buy it. I ski, ride horses whenever I get the opportunity, travel. Mostly, I’ll meet friends for lunch or dinner. An hour over a good meal and glass of wine is so relaxing.
Tell us all about what you’re working on now. |
I’ve just started a fun new project with author Debra Holland. Since we already write similar type books, we put our heads together and brainstormed a fun new western historical project. It centers around both our fictional towns, Sweetwater Springs and Y Knot, both located in Montana. We have yet to announce it, so I don’t want to spill the beans too soon! Stay posted! |
Please share some news about your latest release. | ||
Available at Amazon |
Last November Montlake Romance rereleased Where the Wind Blows, my Golden Heart winner. I love that story! They gave it a beautiful new cover and released an audio version. My husband and I listened to it on the way and back from Oregon and I fell in love with Chase Logan all over again! LOL
What else is on tap for the near future? | ||
In May of this year the sequel to Where the Wind Blows will launch! Before the Larkspur Blooms returns to Logan Meadows, the town where Chase and Jessie settled. It has a new hero and heroine, but readers will still find Chase and Jessie, Gabe, Jake, Sarah and even Mrs. Hollyhock. |

Thanks so much for being my guest this month, Caroline! |
Thank you again, Sherry. |
