What made you say, “Hey, I want to be a published author”?

My love of reading. After just about every book I read growing up I always closed it with the thought, “I want to be an author someday.”

Writing can be a very solitary endeavor, and a crazy business. What do you do to keep your spirits up and keep you motivated day after day?

I’m always motivated to write—always. I just don’t have the time every day to write because I work two jobs and have two young kids. :-) So writing is a luxury to me that needs no motivation.

  1.     Which comes first for you—the characters, or the story?

The characters. I need to fall in love with them first before the story can ever be written.

What inspires you to be the best writer you can be?

The readers—I want them to read my books and WANT to come back for more. If I put out crap, they’ll never come back.

If we were to get a glimpse of your bookshelf, what would we find there?

Everything. Right now I’ve got Lauren Kate, Christopher Pike, Shirl Henke (who wrote an absolutely fantastic historical romance called A Fire in the Blood with a super hot cowboy and a spoiled redhead), there’s Julie Kagawa, Cassandra Clare, Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child, Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Jennifer Crusie, Patricia Cornwell... Too many to list, and those are all stacked on my desk. There really isn’t enough time or space on this page to list what’s on my bookshelves :-)

When you’re not writing, what do you do for fun?

I like to read—a lot. Especially in the winter. In the summer, I’m on an airboat at the river, camping, gardening—I love pretty flowers!

Why do you like to write romantic comedy?

I like to write it for the same reason I love to watch romantic comedy movies or to read romantic comedy novels—I love to smile. I’m not that girl who enjoys having my heart wrenched from my chest with incredibly morbid tales of unrequited love! There HAS to be a happy ending with lots of smiles throughout.

This book is really special to me because it’s my first published novel. It took me a lot of time to find a home for it. I spent two years submitting it to agents and though I had a lot of great response from some top name agents in the romance genre, none of them contracted me. Finally, I gave up the agent search and submitted it myself to four publishers, two of which offered me a contracted a couple of weeks after they received Fender Bender Blues. It’s about love, and life and finding yourself. The characters are real.

What else is on tap for the near future?

Woes of the FABRICATED RELATIONSHIP. It’s a romantic comedy, full of the kind of scenes you’d expect from a family full of girls and a love you might expect that blossoms from the chaos of real life. I’m very excited about it and can’t wait to share more soon!

Thanks so much for being my guest this month, Niecey!

Thanks for having me, Sherry! This has been so much fun! :-)
